Myth: No family history means you don’t have to worry about getting cancer

Truth: You will be surprised to know that genetics account for only 5 to 10 % of all cancers. You are at an increased risk of getting any type of cancer regardless of any history. Your chances of getting cancer are around 1 in 3. If you have a family history of cancer, then make sure to tell the doctor right away. Consult the doctor on time to decide better on what treatment is needed.


Myth: Cancer prevention is not possible with anything

Truth: The cancer cases have no obvious cause and 42% of a cancer diagnosis is linked to modifiable risk factors. The studies have shown that around half of the cancer cases would have been prevented with lifestyle changes.

Even by taking simple steps like eating a plant-based diet, limiting alcohol, and doing the moderate activity for around 150 minutes can prove helpful. Myth: Sleep is not helpful in cancer prevention

Fact: One of the studies has shown that if the person gets 3 to 5 hours of sleep per night, then they are at increased risk of getting prostate cancer. Sleep is an important part of the entire functioning of the body so make sure you are not sleep deprived.


Myth: Oral health and cancer are not related in any manner

Fact: People with severe gum disease are at increased risk of developing cancer as those with mild or no gum disease. The inflammation caused in the mouth can spread to other body parts, and certain bacteria lead to cancer growth.

So it is important to brush and floss regularly. Also, make sure to consult the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning.
