Why is cancer treatment done?
Cancer treatment aims to get the best cure for cancer patients that allows them to live a normal life. It also depends on what their condition is. Cancer treatment may be used as the following:
- Primary treatment
The main aim of primary treatment is to remove the cancer growth from the body or kill the harmful cancer cells. In most cases, surgery is recommended to the patient. If the cancer is sensitive to chemo or radiation therapy then one of these options can be suggested to the patient.
- Adjuvant treatment
- Adjuvant therapy’s main aim is to kill the cancer cells that might be there after the primary treatment. By doing so, the chance of recurrence is reduced. Some of the common adjuvant therapies are hormone therapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
- Neoadjuvant therapy is the same but it is given before the primary treatment to increase its effectiveness.
- Palliative treatment
Palliative treatment can help you to get relief from side effects or the signs & symptoms which are caused by cancer. The symptoms can be managed with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Additional medications that can help you get relief are breath shortness and pain.
What you can expect?
Cancer treatment options include:
- Surgery
The main aim of the surgery is to remove cancer or remove cancer as much as possible.
- Chemotherapy treatment
During chemo sessions, strong drugs are used to target and kill cancer cells.
- Radiation therapy
During radiation therapy, high-powered energy beams like protons, or X-rays are used to target cancer cells.
- Bone marrow transplant
Bone marrow is present inside the bones which helps in making blood cells from the blood stem cells. It is also called a stem cell transplant in which the person’s bone marrow is used, or it can be taken from the donor.
- Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is referred to as biological therapy in which the body’s immune system is used to fight against cancer. By undergoing immunotherapy the immune system can see and attack the cancer cells in the body.
- Targeted drug therapy
With targeted drug therapy, the focus is put on checking the issues in cancer cells which helps you to live for a long time.
- Hormone therapy
Hormone therapy is given by fueling over the body hormones. Some of its examples are prostate and breast cancer. If these hormones are removed from the body or its effect is blocked then the growth of the cancer cell will be stopped.
- Cryoablation
With this treatment, the cancer cells are killed with cold. During the treatment, a thin needle is out in the skin, and it directly reaches the cancerous tumor. The tissue is frozen with the gas, and then it will thaw. The process of thawing and freezing will be done several times so that the growth of cancer cells is killed in the body.
