Stages
There are various stages according to the type of thyroid cancer and the patient’s age.
Papillary / Follicular Thyroid Cancer — Patients under Age 45
As mentioned, papillary thyroid carcinoma is papillary carcinoma (ptc) forms a mass in the thyroid gland which could be solid or cystic mass. The following stages are noted –
- Stage I — The tumor is of any size and might have spread to the adjoining tissues or lymph nodes, but hasn’t spread to other parts of the body.
- Stage II — The tumor is of any size and might have spread to the lymph nodes. Bones or lungs may also be affected by it.
Papillary / Follicular Thyroid Cancer (For Patients Aged 45 and Older)
- Stage I – The cancer size is 2 centimetres or smaller and is present only in the thyroid.
- Stage II — Your cancer size is more than 2 centimetres and less than 4 centimetres and is present only in the thyroid.
- Stage III –The tumor size is more than 4 centimetres and has succeeded in spreading to the nearby tissues. It could also mean a smaller tumor that has reached the nearby lymph nodes.
- Papillary and Follicular Thyroid Cancer, Stage IV
- Stage IV can be classified into “A,” “B” and “C” categories-
- Stage IVA – It is cancer that has spread beyond your thyroid to the lower layer of the skin, larynx, or trachea. A smaller sized tumor which has managed to enter distant lymph nodes is also included in stage IVA.
- Stage IVB – It includes the tumor that has spread in the spine, major blood vessels or your lymph nodes.
- Stage IVC –cancer that has spread far beyond the thyroid area and succeeded in getting to the distant sites of the body like your lungs, bones, and lymph nodes are included in this category.
Treatment
Papillary carcinoma (ptc) is a form of well-differentiated thyroid cancer that is caused due to radiation exposure. It forms an irregular solid or cystic mass in the thyroid gland.
