- Sputum cytology
If you have a cough and sputum (a mixture of saliva & mucus), then looking it under the microscope will help to show the lung cancer cells present.
- Tissue sample (biopsy)
With a biopsy, the abnormal cells are removed and it is done by different procedures like mediastinoscopy and bronchoscopy. The sample taken is evaluated in the lab very carefully.
Imaging tests
Imaging tests help to know how much cancer has spread and which treatment will work the best. Some of the tests are:
- CT scan
- PET scan
- Bone scan
Surgery
This option is for the patients when cancer has not spread and it will treat non-small cell lung cancer. With surgery, the lung part is removed which has a tumor along with the tissues around it. In some cases, the entire lung needs to be removed.
Radiofrequency Ablation
Patients with non-small cell lung cancer but cannot have surgery then this option works the best. A thin needle is passed through the skin till the time it touches cancer and then an electric current is passed with heat to kill the cancer cells.
Radiation
This option is best for small-cell and non-small lung cancer as it uses high-energy X-rays to destroy the tumor. In some cases, it is used in combination with chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy helps in killing the cancer cells in the body for both types of lung cancer. If the surgery does not work this can be your main treatment. The treatment will include a few rounds for several weeks. Oxygen therapy for lung cancer treatment is prescribed to patients with advanced lung cancer and is a suitable candidate for chemo.
If you think you have any symptoms or at risk of lung cancer then talk to the doctor about the test, diagnosis, and lung cancer treatment cost.
