What are the different breast cancer stages?

Stage 0

This stage is non-invasive and it is divided into 2 types. Cancer can be found in the milk duct lining or the cancer cells are formed in the breast lobules. If the woman is at this stage, then it can be treated easily.

Stage 1

Stage 1 cancer is invasive but localized and it is divided into 1A and 1B. In 1A the cancer size is around 2cm and it is not present in lymph nodes. With 1B, the cancer cell size is around 0.2 and 2mm and it has spread to lymph nodes.

Stage 2

Stage 2 cancer is also invasive and it is divided into 2 categories. In the first type, cancer has spread to lymph nodes and it is around 2 cm in size or it can be 2 to 5 cm in size.

In the second type, the cancer size can be more than 5 cm and it has spread to around 4 lymph nodes.

Stage 3

Stage 3 cancer is invasive and at an advanced stage, but it has not spread to other body parts.

Stage 4

Stage 4 breast cancer has metastasized. In this case, cancer has spread to different body parts which include one of the following:

  • Lungs
  • Liver
  • Brain
  • Bones

How does cancer spread?

  • Cancer spreads directly when the tumor has spread to other body parts. In that case, the cancer cells take roots and it starts growing in the new area.
  • Lymphangitic spread happens when cancer spread through the lymphatic system. It means the lymph nodes are involved in this and cancer spread to different body parts.
  • Hematogenous spread moves in the body through the blood vessels.
